Launching 1Password for the first time

The first time you launch 1Password, you will be greeted with the Welcome Assistant.

Welcome Assistant: Introduction

After reading the brief introduction to 1Password, click the Continue button to read about updating 1Password.

Welcome Assistant: Updates

1Password is regularly updated and includes a built-in automatic update system. It is recommended you leave the Check for Updates Automatically option enabled. Please take a moment to subscribe to our newsletter (we promise not to spam you, ever) before clicking on the Continue button to reach about 1Password’s browser integration.

Welcome Assistant: Browser Extensions

You’ll remember from our introduction that one of 1Password’s unique features is web browser integration. It accomplishes this by installing browser extensions, which you’ll enable on this screen. Please note that some files may require Administrator rights to install, causing OS X to open this authorization prompt:

Security Agent Authorization Prompt

Note that this is OS X asking for your Administrator password, not 1Password. 1Password never sees your Administrator password. Please enter your OS X user account password, click the OK button, then click the Continue button to set your 1Password Master Password.

Welcome Assistant: Master Password

The 1Password Master Password is used to encrypt all your confidential information in the keychain. The security of your data is only as strong as this password so be sure to use a strong password. In most cases, a password 8-10 characters in length that does not use dictionary words is sufficient.

While having a strong Master Password is important, it is critical that you remember the password. Committing this password to memory is required because there is no way to recover your data without this password.

Ready to go!

Now that 1Password’s initial setup is complete, you’ll see the Welcome screen.

Welcome Screen
