Using 1Password for iPhone/iPod touch

Before using the 1Password for iPhone/iPod touch applications your 1Password data must be synced first. See Syncing to iPhone/iPod touch for details.

Once synced, you can access both of the 1Password applications from Safari’s bookmark menu. Simply start Safari on your iPhone/iPod touch as normal and then press the bookmark icon at the bottom of the screen.

You will see two bookmarks: 1Password and 1Password Logins. The “1Password” bookmark is a standalone application that allows you to browse all your 1Password data. The “1Password Logins” bookmark is not used to view data, but rather automatically fill login information on web sites.

Below are details on how each application works.

Browsing your 1Password Data

You can view all your 1Password data by pressing the 1Password bookmark. This bookmark is a special type of bookmark. Instead of containing a link to a webpage, it contains the entire 1Password application inside of it. This means all your data is stored locally on your iPhone/iPod touch and so you do not need to be connected to the Internet to view your information.

Here is an overview of using 1Password on iPhone/iPod touch:

Viewing your 1Password data on iPhone/iPod touch

As can be seen to use the 1Password for iPhone/iPod touch application simply select the 1Password bookmark from Safari and the 1Password application will load. The second screen shows 1Password asking for your Access Code that your provided during the sync process. Once you enter the correct Access Code you will be able to browse all your 1Password information.

Logging in to web sites

The second bookmark called 1Password Logins is not a standalone application like the 1Password bookmark above. Instead, this bookmark is used while browsing the web to automatically fill your information into the current web form.

After browsing to a password protected website that requires you to login, simply bring up the Bookmarks menu and select “1Password Logins” to bring up the 1Password AutoFill window. Here is an overview of the process:

Using 1Password Logins on iPhone/iPod touch

Notice that we start on a web page that requires us to fill a form. Instead of typing the data manually we call up the 1Password Logins window, enter our Access Code, and then select the form to fill. The 1Password Logins window will then decrypt your confidential information and then fill it into the web form automatically.

Troubleshooting the 1Password Logins application

There are a few common questions that arise when using 1Password’s iPhone AutoFill feature.

Failed AutoSubmit

The AutoSubmit feature will automatically submit the form for you, but for some websites this will cause problems. When debugging a AutoFill problem, the first thing to do is to turn off AutoSubmit and see if the form fills correctly, and if it does, manually submit the form. If the form does not fill, move on to the next step.

Login Forms Fail to Fill

If a form fails to fill, the first thing to try is to save a new Web Form on your Mac by manually selecting Save Form. Then sync this new form to your iPhone and try again. Usually this will fix the issue as the field names on the web site did not match the original saved form.

“Missing” Popup Window

The AutoFill window will automatically center itself, near the top of the web page. If you are zoomed in, you may need to zoom out to find the window.

Javascript and CSS Errors

The 1Password AutoFill feature uses Javascript and CSS to open a window on the currently displayed page. This window will inherit all the existing Javascript and CSS from the current page, which can potentially cause issues depending on the site.

Due to the millions of web sites, we have not been able to test them all. If you followed all the steps above and still cannot get a particular web site to AutoFill, contact us and we will take a look.
